How to prepare your home for window replacement

By Jeremy Bibb

Replacing your home’s windows may seem simple: remove the old windows and drop in new ones. The process is actually more complicated and requires skilled installers to ensure the windows are properly fitted and work as designed.

After removing your old windows, our expert installers carefully evaluate the existing structure around the windows and make any necessary modifications to prepare the opening for precise installation of your new window. After the window is secured in the opening, the process is finished with low expansion foam and a line of siliconized caulk around the window’s edge to seal up any potential water penetration.

As you can see, replacing windows is a true construction process, so expect dust, debris, noise, and likely a few extra bugs. Here are a few simple things you can do to prepare your home for its window makeover, while keeping your belongings clean and safe.

  • Protect your furniture and keepsakes by clearing three feet around the work area. Any large pieces that cannot be moved will be draped in plastic, then carefully and respectfully worked around.
  • Remove any window coverings including blinds, drapes and interior plantation shutters.
  • Trim landscaping around windows so as not to obstruct installer access.
  • Contact your home alarm company. If your alarm system is connected to your windows you’ll need to turn it off before the installers start work, and your alarm company will need to reconnect any sensors after install.

At Legacy Exteriors we strive to rise above industry standards to deliver top quality communication, installation and follow-up services. Our dedication to our customers extends to our worksites. We understand the disruption that the process causes in your life, and we respect your home during your installation. We protect walkways with temporary floor coverings when needed, and designate 1-2 workers to work inside, minimizing traffic and dust in your home. Some companies will leave the construction mess for their clients to clean up. We tidy up when the project is complete, taking our tools and any leftover materials with us. We want you to be able to enjoy your space as soon as possible after we complete our work. Any home improvement process can be disruptive, but we work hard to do the job quickly and properly.
