Feeling the heat? It could be your windows and doors.

As the summer heat sets in, many homeowners find themselves struggling to keep their houses cool. One of the most common reasons a home is hot during the summer is due to inefficient windows and doors. In fact, 30% of the air your HVAC creates is lost through windows and doors, which means that 30% of the energy you pay for is wasted!

So how can you keep your home cooler this summer? Here are 5 simple steps that you or your handyman can do:

  • Keep your blinds or curtains closed during the day. This keeps more of the UV rays that heat your house from seeping in.
  • Check weatherstripping around doors and repair/replace as needed.
  • Seal air leaks around windows and doors with silicone caulk.
  • Install UV film over windows to reflect a majority of hot UV rays.
  • Invest in storm doors to add an additional layer of insulation.

Some of these tips require expert knowledge to make sure codes and proper installation techniques are followed. If you’re not the handy type, hire an expert.

If you find that these suggestions just don’t cut the heat, it may be time for replacement windows and doors. Many of us who live in southwest Austin have homes 10+ years old that still have builder-grade products. These products have a 10-20 year lifespan, after which they begin to fail from things like weather seals breaking, or even the normal settling of a home.
